I will be moving this inquiry to the Precision DACs Community.

 

When selecting a reference, pay attention to the output voltage temperature coefficient specification of the reference. Choosing a precision reference with a low output temperature coefficient minimizes error sources. The voltage reference temperature coefficient (TC) and longterm drift are primary considerations.

 

You may want to check the Voltage References Quick Selection Guide (pdf). It can be seen here that series type references have better temperature coefficient than the shunt type.


To answer your question, yes you may use shunt type references. In fact, you may use ANY type of reference as long as your application can tolerate the error the reference will produce.
