MSCantrell, thank you very much for your response. It seems you are right. I connected an oscilloscope to this bench supply (no load) and the results are, well, pretty bad. There is a 7V transient during turn on, and 9V during turn off. I have to order the components so I will be able to test this properly in a few days but it seems the cause is right there.
